How to design and build a petanque terrain

26/3/2021

One of our founder members, Brian Forbes, has produced an updated version of his popular advice on the design and construction of a petanque terrain. Particularly useful for clubs intending to create a new playing surface, the document can also be used by those of you wanting to play in your own back garden.

You can find the guidance here.

Newsletter No.30 ~ 2nd November 2020
Disappointing news to open with, although hardly a surprise. As the country goes into a second lockdown as from Thursday 5th November, reluctantly the club will close following the session on Tuesday 3rd November. We will review when we can re-open, hopefully early in December, depending on the Covid 19 situation pertaining at that time. Please do not attend the club during the lockdown.
On 11th October, four players from our club took part in the Pétanque England National Mixed Doubles at Gravesend. Wayne Marshall, together with Di Smith; Soeli Leverett, with Steve Slade; and Keir Gale and Jill Butt fared well in the face of stiff competition. A week later, eight players from our club took up an invitation from Worksop Arena to play in a three way match with them and players from Mansfield. Nottingham came first overall, with Bill Spencer and Jill Butt second in the pairings. It was really good to be playing competitively again and we hopefully can host a return fixture sometime. Incidentally, a warm welcome to Soeli, our newest and youngest member, who has recently moved to Nottingham for university.
As you will know, our Firecracker Triples had to become a doubles event because of Covid restrictions on numbers, but it did take place on 31st October despite bad weather during the day. Fourteen pairs took part, with Julie Bridges and Roy Eyre finishing third, Christian Seville and Chris Brown second, and Jill Butt and Keir Gale finishing first. All had five wins on the day, with the placings decided on points difference. Well done to all who took part and thanks to those members who prepared the pistes for the day, to Elaine and Carol for keeping us supplied with tea and coffee and for scoring, and to Bryan Hodges for organising the day.
Looking further ahead, our Annual General Meeting will take place in January – somehow – and again subject to the state of the pandemic, Pétanque England will be hosting the Home Nations Qualifiers here on 9th May, with another event taking place on Saturday 8th May, details of which have yet to be finalised.
Hoping to see you all again soon – and in the meantime stay safe !
Neil

firecracker tournament 2020

Many thanks to all those who braved some wet weather to play in this year's reduced Firecracker. Instead of the usual triples format, this year's event was a doubles to allow more teams within COVID-19 restrictions.

The competition was played over five rounds, with three teams winning all five games. In third place were Julie Bridges and Roy Eyre. Ahead of them in second were Christian Seville and Chris Brown. The winners were Jill Butt and Keir Gale.

We are grateful to Elaine Paulson and Carol Thorpe for keeping everyone supplied with tea and coffee, and recording the scores throughout the day. Thanks also to all the club members who helped set up, and to Bryan Hodges and Neil Hunt for organising and running the event.

Newsletter No.29 ~ 23rd September 2020
It has been a while since our last newsletter but better late than never. Although things might change in the coming weeks, at the moment we are able to enjoy our regular club sessions, now that the club has been made Covid secure and has a risk assessment in place. However, we all still need to be vigilant and keep to the rules. That means social distancing, keeping to the one way system outside the cabin, use the hand sanitising gel when you arrive, and sign in so we can track and trace should the need arrive. It goes without saying that you should not attend if you have any Coronavirus symptoms.
I am delighted that some new members have joined us so it’s a warm welcome to Ashley Wilson, Peter Seyfang, Mo Mountain, Alan McCormack and Jill Butt
On the playing side some competitions are underway. Wayne and I (together with Steve Harrington) came joint first at the Ravenshead invitation triples on 13th September, and Wayne and Keir both played in the Petanque England singles and doubles competitions at Gravesend on the weekend of 20th/21st September, and both did very well against some stiff opposition.
Our Firecracker event this year has been switched to a doubles event, and moved to Saturday 31st October, so as to leave Sunday free for normal social play. We can only have 30 people on site so entry has had to be restricted to the first fourteen pairs who registered and paid the entry fee, and not surprisingly, we had a full entry very quickly. I am afraid no spectators will be allowed.
There is a men’s doubles event at Rainworth the following weekend, November 8th, and players from Nottingham will be competing.
Thanks to Keir who produced our Risk Assessment, and to all those who helped lay the topping on Terrain 2 back in the summer. I think all will agree it has made the terrain very different and very challenging ! Also a thank you to Elaine and Carol for cleaning the toilets in the pavilion for us – a very important and necessary service at this time.
Stay safe, and enjoy your games.
Neil

Regular club sessions to continue

CLUB SESSIONS HAVE RESUMED AND ARE CONTINUING, BUT SUBJECT TO RULES ON HYGIENE AND DISTANCING. THESE CAN BE FOUND HERE.

July newsletter

30/7/2020

Newsletter No.28 ~ 23rd July 2020
Although the world has hardly returned to ‘normal’, at least we are able to play petanque again. Opening the club up for Sunday afternoon and Thursday mornings has gone well, and there seems no reason now why we cannot open the club again on Tuesday evenings. So from now on, we will open at 2.00pm Sundays, 7.00pm Tuesdays and 10.00am on Thursdays.
We still cannot open the cabin so please continue to bring your own refreshments, and remember we do have to keep to the rules regarding hygiene and social distancing. Please no crowding together on the deck, don’t crowd around the head when playing, use your own boules and jack, and keep your own scores. Keep to the two metre distance and leave a lane free between games. The ladies toilets will be available with the key, but not left open, and you must clean down surfaces after use, as well as sanitising your hands.
Those of you who have been to the club this week will be aware that we have brought in topping for Terrain 2. Thanks to those who helped with this task – Bryan, Kevin, Keir, Peter N, Margaret, Ray, Tony and of course Elaine who kept us supplied with drinks and biscuits ! The surface is granite, and we have a supply stored in the corner for future use. It is thick at the moment, and it needs to bed down, so we will play on it whenever we can and review if any further work needs to be done later.
A big thank you to Keir for organising the Lockdown Cup Singles competition. This was well patronised and the final was evenly contested by Peter Newton and Wayne Marshall. Up to that point Peter had not lost a match, and Wayne had only lost one. The first match was won by Wayne, meaning one loss each and the need for another match, which Peter won, so ending up as Champion. Well done Peter, and indeed to all who took part.
Petanque England continue to issue guidance as to how clubs should deal with coming out of lockdown, and of course we will be guided by that. Before we are allowed to host a competition, which currently can involve no more than thirty people, a full Covid-19 risk assessment would be needed, Some competitions seem to be starting up around the country, and we are hopeful that our Firecracker event in November will be able to go ahead. Watch this space.
In the meantime, stay safe and enjoy your games !
Neil
