Nottingham City Pétanque Club
Newsletter No.52 ~ 17th October 2023
An update on what’s happening at the club. First of all, it’s really encouraging that the club is attracting some new faces. Despite our ongoing issues with our landlords, the City Council, we are now able to carry on as before and hold competitions and visits at the club. We are still waiting to hear from the Council about the prospect of taking over the lease of the pavilion and what they intend to do about the parking issue.
Thanks to everyone who gave up some of their time to carry out some weeding and tidying up the other week. This is a necessity, and we need to keep on top of things. With that in mind we are asking you to come along an hour earlier – at 12.00 on Sunday 29th October and at 09.00 on Thursday 2nd November - to get the site in top condition before one of our main events – the Firecracker Triples on 5th November. We have thirty-four teams entered, including many club members, so will also need some help just prior to that and on the day to help with parking. We also need some raffle prizes so anything you can bring along to the club will help – the more attractive prizes our raffle offers, the more we can entice folks to part with their money !
We will be holding our regular Christmas fuddle on Sunday 17th December. Come along, bring something to eat and /or drink which can be shared amongst us – and we will play a little competition between our club members – details to follow.
We are also starting a Singles competition to find our club Singles champion. Details will follow but look out for a sign-up sheet in the cabin to enter the competition. This will be a rolling event, meaning you need to arrange to play your opponent at a time and date of your choosing, not an event that will take place on one day.
Since the last newsletter, various competitions have taken place. The big one was the Inter-Regional Finals at Pakefield near Lowestoft in September where Brian, Bill, Peter, Paul, Jill and myself all represented Mercia over the weekend. The Championship team did sufficiently well to stay in Division 1, but the Challenge team narrowly lost out and will be relegated to Division 2 next year. Well done to all from the club who took part.
In the Thursday Fours Cup competition, Riders were knocked out in the Cup semi-finals by Mansfield Snappers, but Reivers won the final of the Plate against Ravens, so retaining the trophy they won last year Again, well done all who took part over the season.
In the Sherwood Shield Finals at Mansfield on 24th September, Nottingham finished second to eventual winners Ravenshead. A terrific performance, but let’s go one better next year !
Well done to Kevin and Brian who reached the semi-finals of the Champion of Champions Doubles competition at Rainworth recently.
Anyone who wants to put themselves up for selection for our three Winter League fixtures, the first of which is Sunday 29th October, needs to sign up on the sheet in the cabin. We also have an upcoming Eurocup fixture against Chesterfield on 21st October so let’s hope we can progress in that.
The club is putting in a kit order shortly. If you want any club kit, check out the details in the cabin or on the Whatsapp page and get your order in to Sue as soon as possible.
It’s a warm welcome to three new members – Rik Thirlwall, Greg Pike and James Smyth. A welcome pack is on its way by email. And remember, you can find out what’s happening at the club by looking at our Whatsapp page and on our Facebook page.
Finally, a reminder that when the clocks go back at the end of the month, our Sunday opening time will revert to 1.00pm. However if you have a gate key, you can always come down earlier for some practice.!
Best wishes
Neil
